Last term I attended two very interesting PDs. One was for English co-ordinators. The other was for ICT and the classroom. This blog entry is an attempt to bring to the faculty members some ideas.
At the Co-ordinators’ conference one speaker spoke of the great value of having authors visit schools. It is our intention to chase this up. Country Education is already discussing this. A number of useful websites were recommended and they are available on the right, under Blog Roll. Do not be put off by the name of ‘inside a dog’.
The next speaker, while speaking about her own school and her own faculty was really speaking about succession planning. She was explaining how she organised a cultural change within her faculty. We may not need to go so far but the way she went about it would give in-coming staff a framework for fitting within the faculty.
The ICT conference spoke of the inevitable digitalisation of all learning. This is UltraNet. We explored the use of still pictures and movie applications, such as iMovie to make sophiticated texts. We saw interactive white boards and heard about blogs and podcasts. Schooling in the 21st century is truly digitalised. If you doubt this access MySpace and see what the kids can do. The videos on YouTube are very professional.
I have therefore combined the two conferences and I want to encourage staff to consider the aims and goals of the faculty in an ICT medium – this blog.
I want staff to discuss their vision for the future. Consider what do we keep and what do we abandon? What would you give up? What would you add? What is your vision? What should be our goals?
Please participate in this discussion on-line. Actually this on-line collaboration is to be expected of our students! I recommend an iNet conference for staff to see how it can work.
My learning/worksheets are already on line. As part of the digitalising of education I also want staff to start passing to me electronic copies of some of their learning/worksheets. I will not put them on line but I will burn the collection to a CD – an incredible resource for any new staff.
